In a move to limit building permit applications that are never picked up and paid for, the city Department of Planning and Permitting will begin charging a plan review fee for certain permit applications beginning Monday.
The fee, calculated at 20 percent of the total building permit fee, will be collected when the application is submitted. Mayor Kirk Caldwell on Friday signed Bill 15, which implements the fee.
The plan review fee is separate from the building permit fee. It applies to building, electrical and plumbing building permits. Permits for fences, retaining walls, driveways and swimming pools are exempt.
The city said 2,951 residential and commercial permits have gone unclaimed since 1999, accounting for $2.6 million in unpaid fees and a “waste of time and effort by DPP staff,” a news release said.
Bill 15 also raises fees for certain zoning permits. For more information on the new fee schedule, visit www.honoluludpp.org.
