3 nurses save 12-year-old girl who nearly drowned at Pokai Bay
Three emergency room nurses assisted in resuscitating a 12-year-old girl who nearly drowned at Pokai Bay this afternoon.
The girl was found unconscious at about 4 p.m. Thursday about 10 to 15 yards offshore, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said in an email.
The three nurses were close by and got her out of the water, placing her on a standup paddleboard and brought her to shore.
The nurses performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for four minutes.
Ocean Safety responded by providing rescue breathing using a bag valve mask resuscitator. (The lifeguard stand is about 250 yards away from where the child was found, Enright noted.)
The girl began to breathe on her own, regained consciousness and began talking.

Emergency Medical Services arrived and took over treatment.
The patient’s condition improved and she was taken in serious condition to a hospital, Enright said.
“This is another case that shows how timely CPR saves lives,” Enright said. “We commend these nurses for their actions today.

I am glad that the nurses were not identified. “Good deed don’t count if anybody knows about it”. I assisted in a rescue at Magic Island and the Advertiser identified me as an “Unnamed boogie boarder”. Cool.
