City Council could pay $4.7M for police race case
Honolulu City Council members are considering whether to pay $4.7 million to settle a lawsuit that says the Honolulu Police Department engaged in racial and sexual discrimination.
The federal lawsuit was filed in 2010, alleging that the Honolulu Police Department put officers’ lives in danger when they were refused back-up during nighttime traffic stops. The plaintiffs say they faced retaliation after speaking out about racial discrimination in the department.
Police say no one was disciplined for misconduct.
This lawsuit comes at a time when the Honolulu Police Department has come under scrutiny by lawmakers who are calling for more oversight.

Racial AND sexual discrimination? sounds similar to the Honolulu Airport incident where 2 dumb local cops were harassing a female cop in uniform. So funny watching 2 Filipino cops yelling and accusing each other rather than admitting their guilt. they were yelling and waving at each other in disgust and wouldn’t even look at each other in the eye. I suggest we stop this nonsense hiring dumb and phony sheets and start requiring SAT entry exams. Weed out people who can’t read and write or balance checkbooks. Drop people who joke around too much and can’t concentrate on the work in front of them. Throw out jackasses with bad posture and can’t stand up ramrod straight. Keep those who can look at you in the eye at full attention and can repeat what you just said to them. Scrap mumblers. Tired of losing money to avoidable lawsuits. HPD is badly mismanaged. Need to hire a mainland chief. Maybe Bratton.
Racoon I don’t agree with everything you say, but there is a point, and I don’t know the answer. Is the HPD recruiting at the UH for recruits??? Certainly if the grads want a $100,000 salary the HPD is the place. Then they could get some minds in the program albeit a UH is a step up from HS.
Some college graduates go for HPD careers, such as Officer Zach Goya, who I spoke to at Kahala Zippy’s recently. The advantage that college graduates have in the force is that they move up in ranks much faster, if at all.
Interesting point. Back in the middle-late ’60s, the Berkeley CA police department made a baccalaureate one of the minimum conditions for applications to the department. It has worked pretty well in the decades since.
EXCELLENT post!
And none of the cops (male) were punished or even disciplines. given promotions probably.
“Police say no one was disciplined for misconduct.” Unbelievable.
It means nothing happened. Wouldn’t it behoove the City Council to investigate and at least hold hearings with the plaintiffs and defendants? u know like they do in Congress?
Are they alleging HPD discriminates against it’s own officer based on race? That HPD refused to send back up for night traffic stops conducted by officers of a particular race?
This is a poorly written article, SA has really gone downhill since the merger/consolidation.
