Winds ease, shift as cold front approaches islands
The blustery and breezy tradewinds of last week are weakening and changing as another weak cold front approaches the islands.
Forecasters expect the winds to shift to the southeast by tonight and become variable on Tuesday until the cold front passes Tuesday night.
“We’ve been in a fairly extended period of strong tradewinds and that’s coming to an end,” said Derek Wroe, a meteorologist with the Honolulu office of the National Weather Service.
The southeasterly winds could cause some clouds to form over leeward areas and some afternoon showers.
However, forecasters do not expect extended heavy rain as the front passes.
The southerly winds shouldn’t bring heavy vog over Oahu, Wroe said.

“It looks like the winds are going to be shifting pretty quickly. Most of the vog should stay south of us,” he said.
Expect strong north winds and cool temperatures again for Wednesday and Thursday after the cold front passes.
“It doesn’t look like it’s going to be as strong as the last event,” Wroe said. But winds will still be breezy over Oahu, Wednesday and Thursday especially in areas downslope of the north winds and should gradually decrease for the weekend until another cold front approaches next week.
The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for mostly sunny skies this afternoon and clear skies tonight with the chance of scattered showers. Southeast winds of 10 mph, could gust to 25 mph in the afternoon. The high today should be between 77 and 83 degrees and temperatures tonight will be between 64 and 70 degrees.
Tuesday should be mostly sunny with light winds turning westerly in the afternoon and a chance of isolated showers.
The winds could become breezy with mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers Tuesday night and north winds of 10 to 20 mph. Low temperatures should be between 63 and 70 degrees.
Wednesday and Thursday’s forecast calls for sunny skies and breezy tradewinds of 15 to 25 mph with lows dipping into the 50s in some areas Wednesday night.
