A 50-year-old swimmer is in good condition after spending a long night stranded in the ocean off Keehi Lagoon.
According to the Coast Guard, people aboard the Navatek I tour boat spotted the woman about a mile offshore around 11:20 a.m. Sunday.
The Coast Guard dispatched a 45-foot response boat to rescue the woman and return her to Kewalo Basin, where Emergency Medical Services and Hawaii Police Department personnel were waiting to provide further assistance.
The woman said she had gone swimming between 9 and 10 p.m. Saturday in the Waikiki area and was swept away by the current. She declined medical services.
The incident prompted a caution from the Coast Guard.
“It’s never a good idea to swim by yourself, especially at night,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Aaron Lenk. “If you are going out, inform someone where you plan to go as well as when you plan to return. That way if you do not return promptly, the proper authorities can be notified to search for you. We are happy that she was located safely, especially after a long night in the water.”
