A 10-3 win looks good on the scoreboard, but not so wonderful in the eyes of ‘Iolani baseball head coach Kurt Miyahira.
On their home field Wednesday, the ninth-ranked Raiders rolled past No. 1 Kamehameha to put both teams at 2-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
“We gotta tighten up,” Miyahira said. “We had runners on first and second with no outs two times and failed to execute bunts twice. The ILH is such a tough league and you can’t get away with it if you don’t execute those things. We got ahead (9-0) and let ’em back in. With a seven-run lead, our pitcher walks the leadoff guy.”
Miyahira, in his first season at the helm, is positive about the chances his players will take the constructive criticism to heart as the grueling league season marches on.
“They’re a good group of kids and they’re doing whatever it takes for each other and that’s kinda what it’s about,” he added. “It’s a work in progress, but they’re doing what they’ve gotta do. Do what your supposed to do so the next guy can do his job. It’s about competing. Compete every day.”
Kamehameha starting pitcher Chase Miyasato struggled in the first inning and only recorded two outs before reliever Hunter Breault came in. Miyasato hit two batters and walked two as ‘Iolani stormed to a 5-0 lead, due in part to Devin Ide’s two-run single, Zack Kon’s run-scoring base-hit and Kaimana Bartolome’s RBI groundout.
With Raiders starting pitcher Trevor Ichimura holding up his end, the ‘Iolani struck for four more runs in the fifth to make it 9-0. This time, Matt Campos and Everett Lau paved the way by drilling two-run singles off of Breault.
“Our pitching struggled a lot today,” Kamehameha head coach Thomas Perkins said. “You can’t win ballgames doing that. The thing is, ‘Iolani played a heckuva game. This is the ILH. We’re just going to turn the page, get back on it, work hard and get prepared for the weekend. To put it in simpler terms, we just didn’t play catch. We need to get the ball to the catcher, hit our spots and be a little more accurate.”
The Warriors did not produce any runs off of hard-hit doubles by Miyasato in the third and Mason Quinlan in the fourth. They finally put together a three-run rally against a tiring Ichimura in the sixth. Quinlan and Kawai Takemura connected for RBI singles and Makoa Mau drove in a run with a grounder.
Logan Salcedo, who scored Kamehameha’s first run, led off the big inning by beating out an infield hit and alertly advancing two bases on a wild pitch.
“It was a called steal, so I was going,” he said. “I looked back and saw the ball break toward the fence. I thought I could make it because the catcher didn’t really have the ball yet when I took my turn. We’re going to bounce back tomorrow at practice and grind. Hopefully, the pitchers throw strikes and find their release again and we’ll back them up with our offense.”
Ichimura went six innings, gave up seven hits and didn’t walk a batter. Reliever Brandon Yamane put two Kamehameha runners on in the seventh before getting three straight outs to end it.
Miyahira calls a group of four sophomore pitchers, including Ichimura, “bulldogs.”
“Trevor and Logan (Yee) are our guys and we’re going to ride them and our relief guy, Jordan Iwasaki. They’re all sophomores; it’s a rough league for them to be their first year in, but they’re not not afraid. They challenge guys. Even Yamane, who pitched today, is also a sophomore.”
Campos, a shortstop who will play baseball for the University of San Francisco next spring, went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and had seven assists and two putouts, including a running catch of a hard liner for the game’s final out.
“I had a lot of action today,” he said. “Our last game (a 5-3 loss in eight innings to Punahou) was a heartbreaker, but it was great to see us rebound and show what we’re capable of.”
