Woman killed following Hilo crash identified

A 93-year-old Hilo woman died Tuesday night from injuries sustained in a one-car crash on Kaiwiki Road Monday afternoon.

The woman, identified as Feliza Padilla, was a passenger in a 1990 Oldsmobile sedan driven by a 68-year-old woman when it veered off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole at around 1:18 p.m. Monday, Hawaii County police said in a news release.

The driver and a 71-year-old man were also injured.

Paramedics took the three people in the car to the Hilo Medical Center.

Padilla and the 68-year-old woman were flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu in critical condition. Padilla died at the Queen’s Medical Center, police said.

Investigators do not suspect alcohol or drug use in the crash, but have opened a negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police said it’s not clear if seat belts were used.
