Kalalau trail closed after rains cause flash flooding
The Department of Land and Natural Resources State Parks Division closed the Kalalau Trail today because of flash flood conditions at Hanakapiai Stream.
Parks officials closed the trail at noon.
In February, a flash flood forced at least a dozen hikers to spend an extra night on the other side of the stream after fast-moving waters prevented them from crossing the stream. Witnesses said two tourists were almost swept away while trying to cross the stream.
On Feb. 22, 2013, a 43-year-old woman from New York City died when she was swept away in the stream. Firefighters also rescued 54 other people who had been stranded in the valley.
Officials warn hikers not to cross Hanakapiai until rushing waters subside.
