Woman, 75, dies after hit by car in McCully

A 75-year old Honolulu woman died Friday night after being struck by a car while crossing King Street near McCully, the Honolulu Police Department said.

The woman was in a marked crosswalk at 7:09 p.m. when she was hit by a 90-year-old Honolulu woman driving a 2005 Mercedes Benz traveling eastbound near Hauoli Street.
The 75-year-old woman was taken to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, where she later died.
It’s unknown if speed was a factor in the collision, police said.
Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors.
This is the 7th traffic fatality this year compared to 11 at the same time last year.

The driver was 90. She probably couldn’t see her at night and should not be driving any more.

Island–those are the numbers that hit me too. I am almost exactly between those ages and I do not drive at night nor do I walk at night crossing major intersections.

Do you drink blood, have an aversion to crosses, are a night owl, avoid running water and have an allergy to garlic? And most important to me, do you have to be invited in?
And you have a birth certificate to prove it.

Department of Motor Vehicles need to implement more stringent restrictions to seniors that choose to drive after a certain age.
It is a privilege to drive, however factors for safe driving should encompass reaction-time tests, eye test (night impaired vision) and if they’re on prescription medication- then forbidden to drive.
There are those with dementia who have to be dealt with by family, relatives, or friends. Keys must be taken away or car sold to prevent an accident waiting to happen.
Truly sad when an event like this occurs.

Seems like some compassion may be in order. Twp families have just experienced this tragedy.
Alcohol and anonymity reveal the true character.
Both elderly, dim evening light, bright headlights, loud noise, heavy traffic, everybody speeding up and walking faster to make up for lost time in stuck traffic. Expect more deaths like this. Need economical motorcycle taxis, Thai baht buses (33 cents one way) cheaper Filipino tricycles and jeepneys, more buses (standard and luxury, small and large) more Lyft and Uber at lower rates, or Uber or Lyft buses. Super high car and gasoline taxes like Singapore many years ago solved their problems. Let only the super rich own cars and make public transportation more available. Will be visiting Singapore this year and will see for myself what it’s like. One of the best ways to avoid traffic is vacation somewhere else outside of the USA.
While I grant that age-related conditions on the part of both pedestrian and driver likely contributed to this accident, it should be made clear that we don’t yet KNOW that. I think to be effective and fair, we should require EVERY driver found guilty of causing a reportable accident to present two things: medical certification of good physical health and certification that a road test has been passed, both, barring acute physical illness, within 30 days of determination of guilt. Forfeiture of driver’s license to result if either certification isn’t met.
Old age in both the victim and the suspect was a factor. We can not sugar coat the fact that a 90 year old human being in a luxury automobile was not at fault just because she was just that –privileged: no one is above the law, even Governor Do Nothing Ige.
I don’t think most people tootling around in an eleven-year-old vehicle are likely all that privileged. A typical ‘Benz isn’t in the same class as a Rolls or Bentley.

Lots of family gatherings, business, public and community events continue on past sunset. In any case, 7:09 p.m. isn’t all that late.
Age has nada, nothing to do with it. Today I stopped at a yellow light, not thinking I had enough time before the light turned red. Lo and behold! On my left side AFTER the light was solid red two cars whizzed through the red light. People are getting killed out there – not because of age – but because drivers are extraordinarily careless. They should be CARLESS.
I don’t believe the 90-year old woman will ever be in control of a motor vehicle ever again – unless she doesn’t have any family, relatives, or close friends.
