University of Hawaii women’s volleyball player Olivia Magill and men’s tennis player Chas Okamoto were named the school’s female and male Scholar Athletes of the Year.
The Big West honors a male and female from each conference member.
Magill, who was an integral part of the Wahine volleyball team’s run to the elite eight in December, is a communications major who has earned dean’s list honors.
Okamoto, a native of Kauai, completed his UH career in the spring of 2015. In addition to being a two-time All-Big West honoree in singles, he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in civil engineering last December. Okamoto was a Regents and Presidential Scholar at UH and is a finalist for the 2015-16 UH Engineer of the Year award.
Moniz eliminated in Australia
Australia’s Kalani Ball eliminated Oahu native Joshua Moniz in the Australian Open of Surfing on Friday at Sydney’s Manly Beach.
Ball had a two-round total of 13.84, squeaking by Moniz’s score of 13.50.
