University of Hawaii’s Sinisa Zarkovic and Kupono Fey went to bump the ball during the first set of Friday’s match against BYU.

Sophomore opposite Ben Patch had 17 kills and No. 2 Brigham Young handed No. 7 Hawaii its fifth consecutive loss Friday night, turning back the Rainbow Warriors 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match at the Stan Sheriff Center.

It was the 12th straight victory for the Cougars (16-2, 12- MPSF), who had not dropped a set during that run until the Warriors took Set 3, a streak of 35. BYU moves into a tie for first place in the MPSF with Long Beach State, Stanford and UCLA; all four already have clinched berths in the conference tournament.

Senior hitter Siki Zarkovic had 15 kills and junior hitter Kupono Fey 14 for Hawaii (10-9, 5-9), which has lost eight of its last nine matches. Freshman opposite Stijn van Tilburg added 12 kills and senior libero Kolby Kanetake 18 digs.

The Warriors, who are holding on to eighth place in the MPSF, are on the road for two matches at seventh-place CSUN (11-7, 5-7) next Friday and Saturday.

I’ve heard this effect described to me as the Charlie Wade Fade. He had arguably the best recruiting class last year, and he’s a good recruiter–always. But the team fatigues at the wrong time. We have coaches who are excellent at developing players and their talent. We just always seem to under achieve. I hope we turn this around as the team is in a real funk right now. Go Warriors!
