A 21-year-old man who admitted that he was the driver of a pickup truck that crashed near Makua Cave in 2013, killing one of his passengers, failed to show up in state court this morning for sentencing.

Kamealohanakekaiaulu Wilbur-Delima is now wanted on a $50,000 bench warrant.

Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario issued the bench warrant and ordered the forfeiture of the $15,000 bail Wilbur-Delima had previously posted.

Police say Wilbur-Delima had 11 passengers, mostly teenagers, in the pickup when it crashed on June 15, 2013. Zain Lalawai, 16, died at the scene.

Wilbur-Delima pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in November. The maximum penalty for the charge is 10 years in prison.

Is it just me but that bail amount seems a little low. I understand the purpose of bail is to ensure the suspect doesn’t flee. $15k seems a little low for someone facing 10 years. Oh well…
