An Australian businessman is going to jail for a month for yelling, “There is a bomb on board,” and, “The plane is going down,” after flight attendants on a Qantas Airlines flight to
Honolulu restrained him for being disruptive.
Rohan Forkner pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Tuesday to felony interfering with a flight crew. Forkner, 54, says he doesn’t remember what he did aboard Qantas Flight 3 on Feb. 17.
“I have no recollection of the situation that put me here,” Forkner said.
But he doesn’t dispute what flight attendants and passengers told the FBI.
His lawyer requested, and the prosecutor suggested, that Forkner should be allowed to return to Australia without having to spend any more time behind bars. Forkner spent about a half-day in custody at the Honolulu Federal Detention Center before being allowed to transfer to a halfway house.
U.S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright sentenced Forkner to a month in jail and fined him $5,000. He told Forkner he might not have sentenced him to any jail time had he not said anything about a bomb taking down the airplane.
“If you were sober, the sentence would be years. Clearly, you were not sober,” Seabright said.
Forkner said he remembers drinking vodka in the Qantas lounge at Sydney Airport, boarding his flight and going to his seat. He said the next thing he remembers is waking up, strapped into a seat with his hands bound behind his back.
Flight attendants told the FBI that Forkner smelled of alcohol when he boarded the airplane. They said they tried to assist Forkner when they saw him walking unsteadily around the airplane but that he became belligerent. The flight attendants said Forkner swung his arms and kicked two of them before they were able to restrain him.
