A man died Saturday after running into trouble in the water off Ninini Beach on Kauai.
At about 5:15 p.m. firefighters responded to a report of a swimmer in distress in the area also known as Running Waters, a Kauai County spokeswoman said.
Firefighters found the man unresponsive in an underwater cave and brought him to shore, where they performed CPR on him until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to Wilcox Hospital, where he died.
Search ends for tourist swept to sea
The Coast Guard and Kauai Fire Department suspended the search Sunday for a missing 28-year-old Chicago tourist who was swept out to sea Thursday at Queen’s Bath in Princeville.
Mykola Grebeniuk was caught by a wave as he took pictures along the rocky shoreline.
The search covered more than 6,200 square miles.
“We saturated the area in an attempt to locate Mr. Grebeniuk, but pending further developments, we have decided to suspend the active search,” said Capt. Shannon Gilreath, commander, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu, in a statement.
An HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Barbers Point and the cutters Galveston Island and Kittiwake were involved in the search. The Kauai Fire Department also searched by air and with personal watercraft.
