Justin Perry’s family owns a couple of Division II girls soccer state titles. Now he has a chance to bring home a boys championship.
Perry’s golden goal in the 94th minute gave top-seeded Hawaii Prep a 2-1 double-overtime win over Pac-Five in Friday’s Division II semifinals. Ka Makani (15-1-1) will face Kamehameha-Hawaii (12-4-2) in today’s 5 p.m. championship.
“These are moments you live for,” Perry said. “All the emotions that are running through your body, you don’t get to experience this often and we were ready to seize the moment.”
Perry said this is a special moment for his father, Stephen, who coached Hawaii Prep to the last three Division II girls state titles. His sister, Julia, won her second title with Ka Makani on Feb. 20.
“There’s a lot of respect between the two programs,” Justin Perry said. “We’re just trying to do what they did. They dominated their league and we hope to do the same thing.”
Perry got a pass on the left from the midfield, drove into the box, and his shot glanced off the goalkeeper into the near post.
“I got a nice through ball from my teammate and my strengths are being fast and big and I tried to be physical on the ball,” said Perry, a senior forward. “Luckily I got a clean shot off and it went in.”
Austin Schneider’s goal in the 20th minute gave Hawaii Prep a 1-0 lead. Zac Trevorrow of Pac-Five (4-9-1) converted a penalty kick in the 48th minute to tie the game at 1.
KS-Hawaii, last year’s state runner-up, advanced with a 3-0 win over Honokaa (12-5-0). Liam Kenoi scored twice and David Erskine added a goal in the win. Goalkeepers Jameson Sato and Dorian Salazar combined on the shutout.
“We match up well,” said Perry, whose team lost to KS-Hawaii in the regular season. “We’re both similar in that we have physical, strong, fast players. I’m excited to see what happens tomorrow.”
