Shandon Hopeau’s quick move put Kapolei in the state semifinals.
Hopeau drew a foul in the box 16 seconds into overtime, then converted the penalty kick to help Kapolei beat Kealakehe 2-1 in Thursday’s quarterfinals of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Hurricanes (11-3-1) play top-seeded Kalani in today’s 7 p.m. Division I semifinal. Kapolei had possession to start overtime and sent a ball from the midfield to Hopeau, who sprinted down the right side into the box. He collected the ball near the endline and drew a foul on a Kealakehe player.
“I usually just pick a side once I take the kick,” Hopeau said of his winning goal. “I try to figure out the keeper … (if he’s) looking one way and I go the other way.”
Hopeau’s quick move to get into the box is a golden-goal scenario the Hurricanes practice.
“Part of that scenario is you get after it right from the get-go,” said Kapolei co-coach Ryan Lau. “I thought we did a good job, we didn’t let them get settled into the overtime. We had the momentum at the end of the game and then we went after it and Shandon made a very good, assertive, decisive goal.”
Kealakehe players were emotional after the game and laid on the field as Kapolei celebrated the golden goal.
“It’s a game, there’s always going to be a winner and a loser,” said Kealakehe defender Ari Mench. “Just sucks that we came out as the team that has to lose. But that’s how it’s going to be sometimes.”
Hopeau’s goal in the 12th minute tied the game at 1 as the Hurricanes had to rally against the fourth-seeded Waveriders (13-1-2). Kealakehe scored 56 seconds into the game when Mench headed in a corner kick by Tate Whitney.
“For me it was really nice, got to score in states,” Mench said. “It’s a nice thing to do that.”
Kealakehe dictated the tempo early on as Kapolei tried to catch up.
“To their credit, they caught us in the first 15 minutes,” Lau said. “They scored that goal less than a minute into the game and they caught us kind of flat.”
Kapolei defender Lyric DeLeon booted out two shots while in front of the goal in the 39th and 67th minutes to keep the score at 1-1. The senior anchors the defense with goalkeeper Makana Breault.
“Their balls over the top was perfect,” Hopeau said. “Our defense was under pressure a lot and we were blasting it out.”
