This photo, provided by the City and County of Honolulu, shows the area where four portable toilets burned to the ground last night between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. at Kaiaka Bay.

Vandals at the North Shore’s Kaiaka Bay Beach Park on Monday night set fire to four portable toilets, turning them into a heap of melted, blue plastic.

“What is really frustrating is that we have a restroom out there, and it was set on fire and burned to the ground (in 2014),” Mayor Kirk Caldwell told reporters Tuesday.

Fire investigators determined the cause of that 2014 fire was arson. The portable toilets went were set up shortly after.

The city is expected, in the next few weeks, to sign a contract to replace the permanent restroom structure at a cost of about $500,000, Caldwell said. “We don’t want to have that restroom completed and burnt to the ground again.”

Caldwell urged the public “to show love for these parks, this is our front yard. Whoever did this hurt everyone.” Alluding to how busy the Haleiwa facility and other North Shore beach parks can become when there are enormous waves like the ones this week, Caldwell said “the aunties, the tutus who go over there to look at the waves and use the lua … there is no lua.”

Oahu residents who see vandalism taking place should call 911, the mayor said. “And talk to the people who do these things (and tell them) ‘please, show love.’ It’s hard enough to maintain our parks but when this happens, it just makes it impossible.”

No more toilets for them. Why waste money when you have perps out there running around. As the saying goes one bad apple spoils the barrel.

Of course we know the new $500k bathrooms will be tourched as well. The City may as well burn $500k in cash and avoid the change orders.

How sad is this. These people must not work because they figure its not their tax dollars that’s paying for this.

Waste money, if the don’t want to take care then no need toilets.

Your comment says a great deal more about you than about the arsonist(s).

Put the portable toilets back after you set up cameras. Should you catch the perps torching again make them clean public toilets for 10 years.

Why does a replacement “restroom structure” cost $500,000? There must already be a concrete pad (flooring), water supply, and sewer line. Just put up a concrete block structure, install the toilets and sinks, and hook the piping up. There’s no need for a roof – I’ve seen park toilets elsewhere without roofs. Come on, City, let’s save some of the taxpayers’ money.
