Lahainaluna alum James Horton shot 32 on the back nine to lift Hawaii into fifth place after Wednesday’s opening round of the 40th annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
The Rainbows’ 54-hole tournament ends Friday at Wailua, a municipal course that has been the site of three USGA national Public Links Championships.
Sixth-ranked Texas is in the lead at 276, with No. 17 California 12 strokes back, Washington State and Arizona sharing third at 290 and Hawaii another shot back.
Horton, a transfer from UH Hilo, is tied for second after firing a 3-under 69. Texas’ Beau Hossler leads the individual standings at 67. Teammates Gavin Hall and Scottie Sheffler shot 69.
Skye Inakoshi had a 72 for Hawaii, followed by Scotty Yamashita and Smart Kittirattanapaiboon at 75.
Moanalua graduate John Oda fired 72 for 30th-ranked UNLV, which is tied for ninth with 20th-ranked Washington. Punahou graduate Kalena Preus, playing as an individual for Texas, also shot 72. Oda and Preus won state high school championships.
Boonchant wins Annika Invitational
Thailand’s Jaravee Boonchant fired a tournament-record 65 in Monday’s final round to win the Annika Invitational, an American Junior Golf Association major played in Reunion, Fla.
Punahou seniors Allisen Corpuz (74—218) and Mariel Galdiano (75—223) tied for fifth and 21st. Former Hawaii resident Aneka Seumanutafa (72—222) earned a share of 19th.
Boonchant won by six shots with a three-day total of 210.
