Part of temporary rail framework breaks off in Pearl City

Honolulu rail officials say they’re investigating what caused a temporary construction framework to accidentally “separate” from the elevated guideway over the weekend in Pearl City.

The incident happened Sunday as crews worked in 20-acre area known locally as the Banana Patch, according to Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation spokesman Bill Brennan. The framework belonged to Kiewit Infrastructure West, according to Brennan — it’s the firm that’s building the first 10 miles of the rail guideway. The framework was attached to the three-foot-tall sound wall that’s being erected along the guideway, he said.

No one was injured when it came off, and crews removed the detached frame from the guideway on Tuesday afternoon, he said. The crews were working on other construction-related tasks in the area when it came off, he said.

“Safety is of the utmost importance to the project team, and we’re currently reviewing the incident to prevent future occurrences,” Brennan added in a text. There’s no word yet if this was the first such incident during construction of the rail project, nor did Brennan have any immediate details on how big and heavy the detached framework was.

      Is this really a story? All kinds of stuff happens on job sites. Yes forms do slip and sometimes they fail. Any big concrete job is like that. For the most part crews just go in and fix it as part of a normal day’s work. No big thing really.

      the bigger story should be is why don’t all the concrete girders match up?..some are well over 3 feet off

        Temporary bearings are installed first during initial segment by segment erection crew. After the temporary trusses are moved forward, another crew sets the final position of the guideway (one of the reason one of the guideway spans were damaged per HART progress report) and installs permanent bearings, and then the last step is to install the shear key (IIRC). Check out the progress of such final alignment of the elevated guideway on the Ewa end of Waipahu compared to the temporary bearings on the Honolulu end of Waipahu.

    Since today is very windy, just blame the accident on the winds. The public will never know. Hawaii is so used to being lied at from our top leaders.

    In 1991, there was a terrible incident where an elevated portion of a highway under construction in Hiroshima city fell on the road below, killing 10 in their cars along with 5 construction workers. I’m not saying the scenarios are similar, but I hope those involved here will be extremely cautious to prevent incidents of this nature.     curious if the accident item was related to the local workers or the mainland workers brought in to build the rail. I understand that most of the rail project is going to “specialized workers” not local workers. kiewit is not even bidding on the second 10 miles of the rail-I wonder what’s going on.

    Spooky…I remember driving on the H1 and seeing portions of the rail frame just hanging over the freeway and hoping it was well constructed and didn’t fall on the freeway below. Thankful that no one was injured.

    Anyone who uses the rail when it is done is taking their life in their hands. The posts are crumbling and now this! No way would I ride this obviously under built, unsafe structure.
