Chaminade’s Keani Passi and Chelsea Camello were named the Pacific West Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively.
Passi, a senior outfielder from Pearl City High School, went a combined 3-for-6 with two home runs and five RBIs as the Silverswords went 1-1 against Saint Martin’s (Wash.). Passi earned All-PacWest first-team and AVCA Division II All-American honorable mention honors for the Chaminade volleyball team in the fall.
Camello, a senior right-hander from Waiakea High School, tossed 41⁄3 scoreless innings of relief in an 8-6 win over the Saints in the first game.
HPU’s Martinez-Vich wins weekly award
Hawaii Pacific’s Jaume Martinez-Vich was named Pacific West Conference tennis player of the week after winning three singles and three doubles matches.
Martinez-Vich, a senior from Mallorca, Spain, is the No. 8-ranked singles player in NCAA Division II. He won at No. 2 singles against Sonoma State and No. 21 UC San Diego and at No. 1 singles against Hawaii Hilo.
Martinez-Vich also teamed up with Torben Otto to post three doubles victories at the No. 3 slot, all by margins of 8-2.
The Sharks are 3-0 and ranked No. 2 in the nation.
Vulcans’ Kurokawa receives regional honor
Hawaii Hilo’s Jordan Kurokawa was named the National College Baseball Writers Association’s Regional Pitcher of the Week after a two-hit shutout performance against Hawaii on Saturday.
Kurokawa, a senior right-hander out of Maryknoll, walked two batters and struck out seven in the 1-0 season-opening victory.
