Single-vehicle crash kills Keaau man, 18
Speed and drugs were factors in a single-vehicle crash that killed one man and injured three others Saturday morning on Hawaii island, police said.
Police identified the victim as Albert Gonsalves, 18, of Keaau, a passenger in a 2011 Toyota sedan. All four occupants, all 18-year-old men, were not wearing seatbelts, police said.
The crash occurred about 4 a.m. near the 9-mile marker on Route 11.
Police said the driver was heading northbound when he crossed the centerline, ran off the road, and crashed into a utility pole and fence.
The driver sustained internal injuries and was treated at Hilo Medical Center. One passenger went into surgery at Hilo Medical Center, and another passenger was flown to the Queen’s Medical Center for treatment.
Gonsalves was taken to the Hilo Medical Center where he died at 7:08 a.m.

The invincible age is always testing the waters. Just remember that there are no second chances in this test. Better to keep your inhibitions.
Kinda like got what he deserved, no?
You would say the same if it was your son, daughter, wife, parents?
No, he didn’t deserve it. The kid was 18 and a passenger, not the driver… In any case, who are you to judge?
Speed, drugs, and no seat belts = tragedy. My deepest ALOHA to the Gonsalves ohana.
