Fire investigators are trying to determine what started a fire Thursday that destroyed a one-story Wahiawa home, displacing four people.
Damage to the building on Ilima Street was estimated at $175,000 and $20,000 to its contents. Two neighboring homes and eight cars sustained damage estimated at $17,000. Paramedics treated a 60-year-old man for burns and took him to the hospital in serious condition. Four people were in the building when the fire was reported.
Man dies while kite-surfing in Maui waters
A male tourist died Thursday while kite-surfing in waters off “Kite Beach,” just west of Kanaha Beach Park in Kahului.
Kite surfers reported at 3:51 p.m. seeing the man floating facedown. An ocean safety officer, aided by another kite-surfer, brought the tourist, described as a middle-age man, to shore, a fire official said. Firefighters and paramedics tried to revive him, but he died at the scene.
Suspect arrested in woman’s sex assault
Police arrested a 46-year-old man with no local address who allegedly sexually assaulted a 36-year-old woman Tuesday in the airport area.
The woman told police that the man first assaulted her at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday using a dangerous instrument and then sexually assaulted her later in the evening, police said.
Police arrested the man Wednesday on Aolele Street on suspicion of second-degree assault and first-degree sexual assault.
