City officials are holding a community meeting today to gather input about repairs to the skateboarding area at Ewa Beach Community Park after concerns were raised last month that the facility is in dire need of improvements.
The meeting starts at
10 a.m. at the skate park, where area lawmakers, including city Councilman Ron Menor, who organized the event, and representatives from the city Department of Parks and Recreation and nearby James Campbell High School are expected to attend.
Dozens of skateboarders, including many Campbell High students, packed the Ewa Neighborhood Board’s meeting last month to testify on the unsafe conditions at the facility, such as cracks in ramps and loose pebbles and rocks on the unsteady ground. Skateboarders said they would like to work with the community and lawmakers to repave the skate park, which has not been repaired since it opened in 1992.
An online petition calling for improvements has gathered about 1,100 signatures.
Neighborhood board members and residents largely supported the skateboarders and had suggested the possibility of a public-private partnership.
The city had said officials have been researching costs to update the skate park and that they have done a site evaluation and are ready to move forward once the cost has been determined.
Residents can also provide feedback by contacting Menor’s office at 768-5009 or rmenor@honolulu.gov.
