The blueprint is working perfectly for the Cinderella Lady Cougars of Kaiser.
Rose Shimaoka scored 10 points and, for a second night in a row, Skylar Kimura provided the go-ahead 3-point shot as Kaiser rallied from a 10-point deficit to upset fourth-seeded Leilehua 34-27 in the quarterfinal round of the OC-16/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships.
Freshman Maalaea Kaneaiakala chipped in eight points, including five during a pivotal second-quarter run by Kaiser.
Tywanna Abbott had eight points and eight rebounds to lead OIA champion Leilehua (12-3). Freshman Kaylen Kamelamela added seven points and four steals, while Chyel Palmer added six points and seven boards, and Tianna Hanohano had six points, six caroms, three assists and two blocks.
The dreamy sequence of clutch plays and all-out defense by Kaiser (12-3), the OIA’s fifth-place team, had Coach Simon Bitanga teary after their second win in as many nights.
“What they’ve been through, playing with five girls, then seven, then me coming back and they had to adjust to my coaching style, it’s Cinderella, the adversity they went through,” he said.
Bitanga was suspended early in the season as the DOE investigated him for undisclosed reasons. He was cleared recently and the Lady Cougars have been better than ever since. They got another stellar game from Shimaoka, who added five rebounds and four assists in another 32-minute, iron woman performance. She had plenty of help. Bitanga went to his bench early, using five reserves, and employed a stifling man-to-man defense to spark the rally.
The Cougars also got a more typical game from center Brooke Ho, who had 10 rebounds, five points and three blocks against Leilehua’s stellar front court. Ho, a 6-foot senior, struggled in the opening game against Kamehameha-Maui.
“She shook it off. She came to school and told me, ‘We have to win this game! I’m not playing like I did last night,’ ” Shimaoka said.
The game seemed to turn on an unusual tactical move by Leilehua coach Elroy Dumlao. His team jumped to a 12-2 lead against a Kaiser squad that seemed a step slow and fatigued early. Kaiser chipped away and got within 14-8 when Bitanga switched his team out of a 2-3 zone and into a tight man defense.
He sent senior Chelsea Soong to deny the ball to Leilehua’s gifted 5-10 point guard, Hanohano.
“We had to do something with Abbott and Hanohano being tall and long and killing us,” Bitanga said. “We thought they would run screens and post Hanohano.”
Instead, Hanohano stayed way back at midcourt near the sideline as her teammates attacked without success. Hanohano, who had six points, three boards and a steal in the first quarter, even stayed in the backcourt as the 5-4 Soong hovered nearby.
Kaiser went on a 9-3 run to tie the game at 17 shortly before the half.
“Four on four. If a team wants to do that, we’ll go four on four all night,” Dumlao said.
Hanohano scored just two points the rest of the game.
