The Hawaii State Junior Golf Association has announced the establishment of a college scholarship opportunity, sponsored by Waikoloa Land Company in the name of Thos Rohr.
The scholarship is an annual award for Hawaii island residents who are members of the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association.
The application will be available at hsjga.org on March 2.
Rohr, a former president of Waikoloa Land Company, has a 50-plus year of contributions to the game of golf, the Hawaii golf industry and various golf communities and organizations. As past President of Kapalua Land Co. on Maui, Rohr built the Bay and Village Courses with Arnold Palmer. At the Waikoloa Beach Resort, Rohr renovated the Robert Trent Jones Beach Course and built the Kings’ Course in partnership with Tom Weiskopf. He is also a member of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, Scotland.
“I am truly honored to have this scholarship established in my name,” Rohr said in a press release. “Junior golf is such an important part of the game. The kids learn many valuable lessons through golf, including honesty, integrity, and respect. I believe that today’s junior golfers are tomorrow’s leaders.”
Registration for 2016 season opens
New and returning players can now register for the 2016 Hawaii State Junior Golf Association season. Golfers must be between the ages of 7-18 by July 15, not in college and “demonstrate a basic understanding of the game.”
Annual membership (through Dec. 31) is $35. The fee includes a membership handbook, one-year USGA Junior Membership, college workshops, instructional clinics, rules workshops, 2016 Rules of Golf book, bag tag (one, when joining the HSJGA), GHIN Handicap (donated by the HSGA and USGA) and participation in HSJGA activities and programs.
The 14 & Under Junior Tour Series tournaments on Maui (March 5-6 at Kahili), Kauai (March 12-13 at Puakea) and Oahu (April 23-24 at Mililani) are now open. All tournament applicants must become members or renew before registration can be accepted.
All juniors participating in tournaments must pass an online Rules Quiz annually.
