Hawaii bill would ban growing genetically engineered fish

Hawaii lawmakers say they don’t want genetically engineered fish grown in the islands.

Lawmakers are moving forward with a bill to ban farming genetically engineered fish, which critics dub “frankenfish.” The bill was introduced in response to the United States Food and Drug Administration’s approval of genetically engineered salmon in November 2015. AquAdvantage salmon is the first genetically engineered fish approved for sale and consumption in the U.S.

Opponents say the ban is premature because the fish aren’t currently grown in Hawaii. They say it would be difficult to grow salmon because of Hawaii’s warm climate.

But supporters of the ban worry about whether genetically engineered fish is safe for consumption. They also say the fish could threaten native species if accidentally released into the wild.

If we ban everything anti GMO’ers don’t understand we’d have to ban everything.

  2. serious says:

Aren’t there more important things to do than ban hypothetical items??? How about a lottery????

    • JustBobF says:

A lottery? To steal money from those least able to afford it? No! You want to gamble, go to Vegas!

      • pohaku96744 says:

No, lets steal the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean’s money. They like to gamble. Kinda like what they American Indians are doing to the the white man on the mainland. When I spoke with one of the tour bus drivers making a passenger deposit at Spirit Mountain Resort, he laughed saying just stealing back what they stole from us.

  3. justmyview371 says:

This bill is idiotic, but people have been misled into believing the myth that GMOs are bad for people. That’s ridiculous!

  4. palani says:

Villagers, get out your pitchforks and torches, the mad scientists are doing things we don’t understand.

  5. Cellodad says:

Credit the legislators with working tirelessly to come up with an answer to a question that hasn’t yet been asked.

    • mokuman says:

Agree. Work on problems we face now, rather than ones that are not here yet. When someone wants to grow GMO fish, talk to them to learn if it will be a problem, then decide what to do. Don’t say “No” to something that you don’t know anything about.

..and at the REAL TAX PAYERS time and dime….what a bunch of clowns at the circus tent on Bereatnia Street…

  6. JustBobF says:

Yes! Thank you! We don’t need Franken-fish!

  7. stanislous says:

Why a law? If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.

    • TigerEye says:

And, if your neighbor makes too much noise and steals the slippers off your porch, don’t live there, right? Same principle.

      • South76 says:

You are talking about two different kind of fish, er things. One you make the decision to whether to buy a genetically modified organism, so this is on your own free will. The other is that is can be reported and can be charged with a crime.

  8. sailfish1 says:

We allow GMO products already. The only thing that should be done is to label them as “GMO products”.

  9. Bumby says:

The genetically modified organism “frankenfish” does not have big powerful Monsato behind them to have our politicians coerced to allow such a fish industry in Hawaii. Yet they allow our food crops that are GMO to continue here. They are both living organism. As they say follow the envelope trail.

I would be more concerned about other things born here then sent to China and Vietnam, raised to maturity-jumbo size then sent back to our markets. Watch um load onto Korean Air cargo all the time. At least if it is done here, it could be inspected.
