HALF MOON BAY, Calif. >> Just after the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau surf contest finishes in Hawaii, some of the world’s best big wave surfers will head to Northern California for the Titans of Mavericks competition on Friday.
The premiere big wave surfing event is a one-day invitation-only surfing competition that is held at the legendary Mavericks surf break located near Half Moon Bay, about 20 miles south of San Francisco.
The 24-surfer field from around the globe got the call Tuesday afternoon and will now scramble to get to the Northern California coast by Friday.
The competition is held when the surf is just right, between Nov. 1 and March 31. National Weather Service forecasters are predicting waves between 13 and 14 feet on Friday but waves could reach up to 25 to 30 feet, with the occasional breaker hitting the 35-foot mark.
The contest was last held in 2014.

Been to Half Moon Bay Area outside of San Francisco and it is not a spectator friendly place to watch big wave surfers. I hope Eddie Aikau surf organizers with City and State officials plan on some kind of FREE shuttle from Waimea Bay to a large area people can park their cars like Haleiwa Boat harbor or something and help eliminate the gridlock traffic like the Hawaii pro Bowl fiasco. However par for the course to have a poorly managed traffic control at the Eddie Aikau surf contest. Even those narrow propane driven golf cart like lead car pulling a train of people sitting in the back like at Disneyland to get people from the parking lot to the Disney front entrance; and using the shoulder of Kam highway bypassing gridlock traffic would make a big difference in making the Aikau surf contest a positive memorable event for residents and visitors.
Stay home and watch on TV or online.

nope…da buggahs in Bay Area get access to one special kine satellite and plenty handgliders over the coast that can see far far away…always on the money….see you at Mavericks on Friday….funny kine place to watch so might need to use live TV feed being setup now…
