The OIA boys soccer playoffs opened Monday with a trio of upsets.
Castle, Kalaheo, Radford and Moanalua advanced to today’s quarterfinals with wins.
The Knights (5-4-2), seeded sixth out of the East, had the biggest upset, taking down West No. 3 seed Pearl City (7-3-1) in penalty kicks 3-1 after the game remained scoreless through regulation and two overtimes.
Goalkeeper Micah Moon kept the goal walled off for Castle, allowing no balls through before penalty kicks and even then stopping three of Pearl City’s four shots.
The Knights got penalty kicks from Kai Zimmerman, Michael Bocoro and Nainoa Pokaka’a.
Castle advances to face East No. 2 seed Kaiser (9-2-1) at 5:30 today at Mililani.
Kalaheo 3, Campbell 2 (4-2 PK)
The Mustangs (6-3-2), seeded fifth out of the East, upset West No. 4 seed Sabers (7-4-0) to move into a quarterfinal matchup today at Roosevelt against unbeaten East top seed Kalani (10-0-0) at 7 p.m.
Thomas Focht and Kai Morgan scored for Kalaheo. Boogie Mattos and David Tupper netted shots for Campbell.
Radford 1, Kahuku 0
The Rams (7-4-0), seeded fifth from the West, knocked out the East No. 4 Red Raiders (6-4-1).
Peter Santa Ana’s lone goal propelled Radford to a matchup against West top seed Mililani (10-0-0) today at 7 p.m. on the Trojans’ field.
Moanalua 3, Leilehua 0
The Menehune (7-2-2) were the lone higher seeds to advance Monday, the East No. 3 shutting out the West No. 6 Mules (3-8-0) for a chance to meet West No. 2 Kapolei (8-1-1).
Liam Goetz, Dylan Cabalang and Kenan Ago scored for Moanalua.
The Division II playoffs start Wednesday.
