Hawaii soccer coach Michele Nagamine is optimistic her 2016 signing class will infuse her program with some grit.
UH inked five players this week, including 2015 Star-Advertiser Player of the Year Tia Furuta of Mililani, who scored 26 goals and led the Trojans to the state title as a junior.
Toughness and finishing ability were things Nagamine felt her team lacked in its woeful 2015 season (3-14-1, 0-8 Big West).
“This is going to be a really fun, young group to watch,” she said. “They’re pretty fearless as a whole and they like to mix it up, play physical. They’re not the hugest, but they’ve got pretty good size, 5-6, 5-7. They’re just competitors.”
Joining Furuta are three players from Southern California (Myranda Rae Baca, D, Aliso Viejo; Sammi Walker, F/MF, Moorpark; and Kylie Wolfe, F, Chino Hills).
Forward Mikaelah McKinney-Griggs of Beaverton, Ore., rounds out the class.
Nagamine noted all members of the class committed around two years ago.
“It was actually always my dream school,” Furuta said. “I used to be a ballgirl at the games, and just watching them play as I was growing up, I knew I wanted to come to UH.”
Said Nagamine: “She’s got good size and she’s strong and has a (5-5) body that’s built to hold the ball and fend defenders off. She’s going to be really, really entertaining to watch.”
