Cory Lange’s career-high 29 points were not enough as Cal Baptist defeated BYU-Hawaii 97-90 in a PacWest Conference men’s basketball game on Wednesday in Riverside, Calif. Justin Park added 19 points, while Justin Yamzon and Ian Harward chipped in with 13 points each for the Seasiders (12-8, 9-6 PacWest). Scott Friel recorded a double-double (15 points, 14 rebounds) in the loss for BYU-Hawaii, who shot 58.1 percent from the floor and 56.3 percent from three-point range.
The Lancers were led by a career-high 38 points from Gelaun Wheelwright. Taj Spencer recorded a double-double (19 points and 12 rebounds) for Cal Baptist (18-5, 9-4).
After going into the halftime break tied at 54, Cal Baptist used a 12-3 run to take the lead for good at 81-73 with 4:33 left.
BYU-Hawaii finishes the road trip with a game on Friday at Azusa Pacific, tip set for 5:30 p.m. HST.
>> Cal Baptist made it a sweep over BYU-Hawaii as the women’s contest went in favor of the Lancers, 93-72. “We played hard for about 30 minutes, but against a great team we must bring the intensity the entire time,” BYU-Hawaii Head Coach Craig Stanger said in a release. Celeste Claw paced BYU-Hawaii (8-11, 5-9 PacWest) with 17 points, while Jiashan Cui added 15. For Cal Baptist (20-1, 12-1), Cassidy Mihalko scored 29 points.
The Seasiders shot just 39 percent from the floor and were outrebounded by 12.
The women will play Azusa Pacific on Friday at 3:30 p.m. HST.
