Two surfers rode a wave at Waimea Bay on Jan. 20. A high surf warning is in effect for the north and west shores of most islands through 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Although the current northwest swell is declining, a larger-than-expected reinforcing swell from the same direction is expected to roll in today, prompting forecasters to issue a high surf warning for the north and west shores of most islands.

Surf is expected to build up to 24 to 32 feet along the north shores of Kauai County, Oahu, Molokai and Maui from this afternoon through this evening, according to the National Weather Service. The west shores of Kauai County, Oahu and Molokai should see surf up to 16 to 22 feet during the same time.

The high surf warning is in effect through 6 a.m. Wednesday.
