Woman recovering after falling 50 feet off trail, cliff
A California woman is recovering after falling 50 feet down a steep embankment and a 15-foot cliff off a trail in the Iao Valley.
Maui County firefighters said in a news release Friday, that the 21-year-old woman was knocked unconcious for about 30 minutes after the fall at about 3:25 p.m. Thursday.
Thick forest prevented the Fire Department helicopter from reaching the woman Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters rappelled down to the woman and found her conscious, sitting on a rock with a hiking companion.
Firefighters treated her for head injuries and secured her in a rescue basket.
Rescue crews set up a rope system so they could pull her up to Iao Valley Road, where paramedics took the woman to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition at 5:38 p.m.

Tough lady. She will just brush off and hike the trail again.
agree…5 story building fall
She must have come from a video game. They never seem to endure any pain.
Very lucky.
We all are blessed with an angel with us.
Didn’t I see this on an episode of “Hawaii 5-0”?
Book ’em!
CTE in the future? Maybe should wear your lightweight foam bicycle helmet. Remember that child who died when a rock fell out of nowhere on top of her head when she was hiking? Sacred Falls? Sloppy kine reporting. Where was she from? Was she hospitalized for overnight observation to check for neurological signs. Brain swelling in a hard bony cranium is serious.
California and Maui Memorial.
Her C spinal neck would have been crushed by the weight of the rock.
Right. The least the SA could have done was scan a copy of her chart when no one was looking so they could write you a decent report.
I’m not a doctor and can’t practice one.
Was she taking a selfie at the time?
Isn’t this how Johnny Carson’s son died?
God bless Mr. Carson’s son. Rest in peace.
I only take a selfie when I am in bed. It’s a whole lot safer that way. Only can fall off of the bed. Hope the puppies are not sleeping down there.
Hasn’t this tourist ever heard of the law of gravity? FD ought to charge her for the rescue!
You’ve never, ever taken a fall in your entire life. Your overprotective mother made sure of that, eh, Junior?
Carang… That is one lucky baby, Hana…, who was never dropped on the head by his mother…
So I take it that, Hana.., is always wearing a protective helmet all the time. Even when he is in the shower stall?
Spoken like a true d_____bag, Hanabata.
Well, if you think people should live in perpetual fear of Newton’s laws, I guess you won’t be crossing any streets, driving any cars, traveling by air or descending any flights of stairs. Bills you know.
Puppies would have to wear a safety helmet, too.
Anyone falling off a cliff has no business being up there. Stay put in the hotel and enjoy the beach and watch the surfers. Safer and you won’t spend your vacation in the hospital.
Why go on vacation to begin with? She can see plenty of exotic places on TV and never have to leave the safety of her home.
I have a discount coupon for a helicopter ride over O’ahu.
The exotic scenes in Hawaii are behind closed doors.
Like she went up there to fall down on purpose just to be in the news? Nobody I know plans to fall off a cliff. OMG,
Come on, SA writers. You forgot to mention when the woman was rescued. Article says she fell at 3:25 pm on Thursday, but are very unclear what day she was rescued. Lern to rite!
