The seventh-ranked University of Hawaii water polo picked up two more wins on Sunday to close the three-day UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational at 5-1.
Rainbow Wahine freshmen Julia Barton, Femke Aan and Carla Abellan scored two goals each in a 7-5 win over No. 8 San Jose State in UH’s first match of the day at UCSB’s Campus Pool. UH junior Nikki-Marie Bell’s goal at the 5:43 mark of the third quarter broke a 3-3 tie and Abellan’s second goal of the morning gave UH a two-goal advantage. SJSU closed to within a goal at 6-5 in the fourth quarter, but Barton scored UH’s final goal and the Wahine held off the Spartans the rest of the way.
UH then closed the tournament with a 12-3 rout of CSU Bakersfield. Barton scored four goals, one in each quarter, and Danika Kotylak and Irene Gonzalez added two each.
UH next plays in the Brown Invitational in Rhode Island Feb. 5-7.
Wahine tennis team knocks off Arizona
Hawaii freshman Marina Hruba remained undefeated in singles play and the Rainbow Wahine tennis team upset No. 64 Arizona 4-2 on Sunday at the UH Tennis Complex.
Hruba teamed with Paulina Petriskova for a doubles win. UH’s Cindy Nguyen and Roxanne Resma also won their doubles match to give UH the first point of the day.
Hruba then defeated Arizona’s Shayne Austin 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to improve to 8-0 this season. Resma defeated Inge Hendrikx 6-4, 6-2, Sarah Gealer won her match with Kinga Gartner 6-2, 6-3 and the Wahine improved to 2-4 this season.
