Matt Damon says Hollywood must do more to support diversity
PARK CITY, Utah >> Matt Damon says the movie business has “a long, long, long way to go” when it comes to diversity.
Hollywood must do “much, much, much more” to reflect the audiences who watch movies, the best actor nominee told The Associated Press on Saturday.
“We’re talking about huge systemic injustices around race and gender that are a lot bigger than the Oscars,” Damon said. “They’re massive issues in our industry and in our country.”
Diversity has dominated the conversation around the Academy Awards since last week’s nominations revealed a second consecutive year of all-white acting nominees. On Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced sweeping changes that include doubling its female and minority members by 2020.
Damon said the move is “a wonderful first step.”
“But that’s what it is,” he said. “A first step.”

You are correct. Loved you in the Martian.
An intellectual observation and recommendation are more likely to create positive results than actions affecting the whole movie industry. Way to go Matt Damon!
So Matt, does this mean you will refuse any and all future awards?
does this mean he will hire more minorities in his films a
I am a little confused. Shouldn’t it just be about who is the better actor? And if we are going to talk about who is left out, how about Asians?
Agreed that it should be about the best actors being nominated. That being said, Idris Elba should have received an Oscar nom for “Beasts of No Nation”. As far as Asian actors getting snubbed by the Academy, can you name one Asian actor who should have gotten nominated this year?
I agree with you. Idris Elba has a phenomenal talent. If I could have been half the actor he is, I wouldn’t be commenting here.
So now the libtards in Hollywood are calling for affirmative action in the selection of the Oscars? LOL! idiots
How about they just give all of them a participation trophy that way they can all be happy. First world problems…Jeez! Is not the millions of dollars enough to keep you feeling good about yourselves.
A participation trophy. Thats funny?
The fact that someone of Mr. Damon’s stature is discussing this is really positive.
I like him but this does make him look very politically correct and look like the good white guy.
