Kamaile Kandiah scored 10 of her 14 points in a pivotal third quarter as No. 4 Punahou pulled away for a 50-41 win over No. 7 ‘Iolani on Thursday night at the Raiders’ gym.
Punahou kept its share of first place in the tough ILH at 8-1 (12-7 overall), completing a three-game series sweep of ‘Iolani.
“A lot of teams are adjusting in the third round. We just had to be patient and tonight, our team really worked together,” Buffanblu coach Liz Kam said.
‘Iolani fell to 4-5 in league play. Punahou won the battle on the boards, 30-21, and limited the Raiders to 3-for-20 shooting from the 3-point arc. The Buffanblu used a mix of man and 2-3 matchup zone to thwart the normally sharp-shooting Raiders.
“They came out and extended their defense a little more. If one of us shot as hot as Lexie (Taylor) did, the score would’ve been opposite,” ‘Iolani coach Dean Young said.
Taylor stepped up with 14 points, including three 3-pointers. The junior swished all three of her treys in the first half when Punahou’s posts, Va’e Malufau (eight points, 12 rebounds) and Tyra Moe (four points, 10 boards), recognized double-team coverage and swung passes. She was wide open on the perimeter, making the most of her opportunity.
“Whether I start or come off the bench, I just do what I can for the team,” said Taylor, who started. “Everybody’s been doubling our bigs, so I have to be ready.”
Malufau hustled in the paint for a low-post layup and a follow shot to help Punahou extend the lead to 29-24 midway through the third quarter. Then Kandiah drove for back-to-back buckets, then finished the third quarter with a 10-foot runner off glass and a 3-point rainbow from 25 feet out. That final shot of the third came just before the buzzer on a drive-and-kick feed by Elle Uyeda (10 points, five rebounds), giving Punahou a 38-30 lead.
‘Iolani switched back and forth from man to zone defenses, but kept the fullcourt pressure on all night. Punahou responded with a relatively low nine turnovers. After the versatile Uyeda sank a wing 3, the visitors led 41-31 with 3:55 remaining.
‘Iolani stayed within striking range, getting a 3-pointer from freshman Taylor Wu to pull within 41-35 with 1:59 to go. Punahou simply was clutch at the free-throw line, getting 5-for-6 shooting from Taylor and 4-for-4 from Uyeda in the final quarter.
The Raiders got no closer than six the rest of the way.
Wu led ‘Iolani with 15 points despite early foul trouble. Camy Aguinaldo tallied eight points. The Buffanblu limited ‘Iolani’s Skylar Nakata, a 3-point sharpshooter, to just two 3-point attempts.
“We practiced for that yesterday,” Kam said. “We said, ‘No 3s from the beginning, get a hand up.’ ”
The third meeting between the longtime rivals was basically a stalemate for the first 16 minutes. Though Punahou won the first two meetings, ‘Iolani barely lost the previous matchup at the Raiders’ gym, 70-67.
“We worked together as a team,” said Kandiah, a junior point guard. “We slowed down our tempo and got the ball inside-out. Lexie was hitting her threes.”
