• Several rescues reported as 50-foot surf hits north shores

Although wave heights are significantly lower today, surf was still large enough to warrant extending the high surf warning for some islands.

Surf is expected to rise to 20 to 25 feet today for the north shores of Kauai County. The west shores Kauai County could see surf up to 15 to 20 feet, weather officials said. The warning is in effect through 6 p.m. today.

A high surf advisory is in effect for north and west shores of Oahu, Molokai and Hawaii island and the north shore of Maui. The advisory is in effect through 6 a.m. Friday.

The large north-northwest swell is expected to generate surf up to 18 to 24 feet along north-facing shores today, lowering to 12 to 18 feet this afternoon. West-facing shores could see surf up to 12 to 18 feet this morning, lowering to 8 to 12 feet this afternoon through tonight.

Trade winds will return today along with showers in windward and mauka areas, forecasters said. However, light and variable winds are expected to prevail Friday bringing dry conditions with highs in the lower 80s.
