Forecasters anticipate even larger surf than expected today after a high surf warning went into effect at midnight.

Surf is expected to rise to 35 to 45 feet today for the north shores of Oahu, Maui County and Kauai County. The west shores of Oahu, Kauai County and Molokai could see up to 20 to 30 feet, weather officials said. The warning is in effect through 6 a.m. Thursday.

A high surf advisory is in effect for west shores of Hawaii island.

Forecasters said a very large north-northwest swell will bring warning-level surf of 35 to 45 feet to north-facing shores today, then lowering to 20 to 25 feet Thursday.

The surf is expected to slowy trend down below advisory level as early as Thursday night.

“Only highly-experienced persons should enter the water,” the weather service said. “Inexperienced persons should remain off beaches and adjacent beachfront areas. Large breaking surf, significant shorebreak and dangerous currents make entering the water very hazardous. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.”

A weak cold front moving over the islands today could also bring scattered showers to the North Shore.

Forecasters are calling for an increased chance of showers this morning, especially for north-facing slopes.

Temperatures dipped into the mid-60s this morning due to the north winds, and Thursday morning is likely to be just as cool.

Tradewinds are expected to return Thursday and Friday, but winds will likely become light and variable again this weekend.
