Fabian Gomez, of Argentina, hits from the tee box on the first hole during the final round of the 2016 Sony Open today at Waialae Country Club.

Fabian Gomez needed the 20th hole at the Sony Open in Hawaii to secure his second PGA Tour victory today at Waialae Country Club.

Brandt Snedeker knocked in a 4-footer for birdie at the 18th in regulation for a 4-under 66 to force the playoff with Gomez. Both golfers returned to the par-5 18th in search of the $1.044 million first prize.

Gomez closed with an 8-under 62 to catch Snedeker with two of his 10 birdies coming over the final two holes, including a 22-footer from off the fringe at 18 to shoot a 20-under 260 for the tournament. Zac Blair had a chance to join them at the last, but his 15-foot eagle putt just missed. He tapped in for birdie to shoot a 19-under 261 to finish alone in third.

Snedeker was first up on the opening playoff hole, hitting his drive in nearly the same spot of rough he did in regulation. Gomez joined him in the rough, but had a tougher second shot than Snedeker’s. Neither reached the green with their second shots.

Snedeker hit his third shot from about 55 yards to within 12 feet of the cup for birdie. Gomez followed with a chip shot that left him about 15 feet away, forcing him to putt first. He just missed it to settle for par as did Snedeker.

So back to the 18th for the second playoff hole. Snedeker hit a woeful shot off the tee, leaving him in a bunker up the right side. Gomez used an iron off the tee to keep the ball in the fairway, but he was farther back than Snedeker.

Snedeker opted to lay up and then chip to within 10 feet for birdie above the hole.

Gomez hit a wonderful second shot from the fairway and just made it to the green for a long eagle putt. He left it a little short, but tapped in for birdie. Snedeker’s putt slid wide right. He dropped to 2-1 in playoffs.

When the start of a competition looks bleak, take heart you can end up being the winner! Congratulation!
