When the bell tolls on Sunday, it tolls for Martin Luther King Jr. — 39 times, once for each year of the slain civil rights leader’s life.
The free public bell-ringing ceremony is part of the MLK Day observance every year in Hawaii — and in 300 other sites that share the tradition, said Marsha Joyner, one of the organizers of the ceremony.
The Nagasaki Peace Bell near Honolulu Hale is the usual venue, but the ceremony this year is moving to the Parke Chapel at St. Andrew’s Cathedral.
The reason: Budget constraints at the city mean no staff was available to work Sunday, enabling the event on city property, Joyner said.

The ceremony, with a musical program, starts at 4:45 p.m. The bell rings at 6.
