Ricky Barnes tees off on 12th hole at the Sony Open today.

With the winds on the down low during today’s opening round of the Sony Open in Hawaii, the scores went with them, as Ricky Barnes, Vijay Singh, Morgan Hoffmann, Kevin Kisner and Brandt Snedeker managed 7-under 63s to tie for first place.

There were 19 golfers within two shots of the lead as conditions at Waialae Country Club were near ideal for the first full-field event of 2016. Si Woon Kim, British Open champ Zach Johnson and Charles Howell III were another shot back at 6-under 64. Several past champions here could be found among the leaders, including Singh (2005 Sony Open champ) and Johnson, who won here in 2009.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” said Singh, who is one of three golfers in the field who will take part in the Champions Tour season opener at Hualalai Golf Club on the Big Island. “I was playing well, feeling good about my body, my swing, my mind. So, I just went out there , and it was early, so I didn’t know how it was going to turn out. But I started off well and kept it going.”

There were four local golfers in the field, including Parker McLachlin, who fired a 1-over 71 to remain on the edge of the cut. He needs to shoot a solid round in the 60s on Friday to have a chance to play through to the weekend.
