2 small earthquakes shake Hawaii island

This map shows the location of three earthquakes greater than magnitude 3 on Hawaii island. The dot on the left shows the location of a magnitude 3.0 earthquake Wednesday night about 5 miles from the summit of Mauna Loa. The center, yellow dot shows a magnitude 3.4 earthquake on Jan. 3 and the dot on the right shows a magnitude 3.2 earthquake that struck near Fern Acres Wednesday afternoon.

Two small earthquakes shook the Big Island Wednesday, but there were no reports of serious damage or injuries.

At 1:27 p.m., a magnitude 3.3 earthquake, centered about 11 miles south of Fern Acres and 25 miles south of Hilo struck at a depth of about 5 miles.

Another earthquake hit at about 8:32 p.m., with an estimated magnitude of 3.0. It was centered about 5.3 miles south-southwest of the summit of Mauna Loa and 28 miles southeast of Kailua-Kona at a depth of 2 miles.
