Head coach Greg Tacon and the seventh-ranked Kamehameha Warriors breathed a small sigh of relief, having broken through for their first Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball victory Wednesday at Kekuhaupio Gym.
It’s Kelly Grant and his No.6 Maryknoll Spartans who are smarting for the third time in a row to start the league season after the 55-50 loss to the previously winless Warriors.
Kamehameha’s 13-point run to start the second half was an important blow that Maryknoll did not recover from. With 3-pointers from Kaeler Kahana, Saint Gelacio and Kamren Victorino-Kato in the surge, the Warriors exploded out of the locker to turn a three-point deficit into a 34-24 edge.
The 3-point circus was a mainstay for Kamehameha all night. All told, the Warriors hit nine of 17 from beyond the arc, 53 percent.
“Obviously, the 3-pointers kept us in the game,” Tacon said. “We had been losing some of the hustle battles and the ability to make 3s can cover up all sorts of mistakes. That is some great 3-point shooting. Usually, I’d be really, really happy with 40 or 45 percent.”
Still, Maryknoll (0-3) didn’t cave in after going down 42-29 at the end of three quarters.
Every single possession in the fourth quarter was hotly contested. Players going to the hoop on both ends could expect to get fouled, and sometimes hard. Led by Hayato Kamata, the Spartans doggedly came back to cut it to one point, 44-43, with 3:35 to go. Kamata had six of his team-high 13 points in the rally.
From there, the Warriors (1-2) went just 9-for-18 from the free-throw line, but it was enough to close it out. Maryknoll hurt its chances by hitting just two of six free throws down the stretch.
At 45-43, Grant said two of his players had a hand on a defensive rebound, but the ball popped out to the Warriors’ Fatu Sua-Godinet’s hands, allowing Kamehameha to retain a crucial possession. Later, Kamehameha’s Noah Gelacio stole the ball from dangerous Spartans post Brian Washington and went coast-to-coast and missed before teammate Kobe Young hit a putback for a comfortable 50-43 bulge.
“We had problems with their screens,” said Grant, when asked why the Warriors had so much success from long range. “They were setting screens all over the place and it made it difficult for us to make switches and figure out who’s got who. It gave them open looks.”
Kahana, who finished with a game-high 17 points, had three of Kamehameha’s treys.
“We did a great job of shooting in practice and that was reflected in the game,” he said. “Our shooting was off the last couple of games (losses to ‘Iolani and Punahou). Our bigs set good screens and that really helps our guard-heavy team. We have about 10 guards who can all handle the ball.”
Tacon said a healthy Sua-Godinet, who had been nursing some injuries from football season, made a big difference in the team’s overall play. And the coach knows he’s fortunate to get a win.
“Oh my God, absolutely,” he said. “This league is full of talented, well-coached teams.”
Michael Mercado-Smith scored 10 points for Maryknoll, including two 3s. Isiah Gelacio added eight points.
Jayden Zarriello and Victorino-Kato put down two 3s each for the Warriors.
