Kauai officials are reminding residents about the proper disposal of household hazardous waste after a recent assessment of materials disposed at county refuse transfer stations and in refuse carts.
Proper disposal methods are provided on most labels because products sold in containers marked caution, warning, danger or poison become household hazardous waste when discarded, officials said in a news release Tuesday.
Such leftover waste could result in noxious vapor emissions or spontaneous combustion when mingled with mixed waste, according to the release.
Any remaining product should be stored at home until a semiannual household hazardous waste collection event is held. The next collection event is slated for April 9-10.
For detailed information, including instructions for managing certain items if you cannot bring them to a collection event, visit the county’s website at kauai.gov/hhw or call the Recycling Office at 241-4841.
Upkeep to close hoops courts
The Lanai Fifth Street Park Basketball Courts in Lanai City will be closed for acrylic resurfacing from Jan. 25 to Feb. 5.
Adjacent tennis courts will remain open. Temporary signs will be posted to inform the public of the closures.
