A 59-year-old Kailua man died and his 25-year-old stepson was seriously injured in a bizarre ocean incident Saturday.
The two men were diving in waters off Lanikai Beach about 1 p.m. when the younger man was struck by the propeller of a passing boat.
The injured man was helped ashore and transported to a local trauma center, according to Ocean Safety spokeswoman Shayne Enright.
However, the older man, described by relatives as an experienced free diver, could not be located, prompting an intensive search of the area by Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety personnel.
The man’s body was located two hours later roughly 200 feet from shore.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
