More than six months into a major Hawaii Tourism Authority reorganization, the state’s top tourism agency made three key additions to its management team.
Leslie Dance has been hired as the HTA’s new vice president of marketing and product development. In the HTA’s top marketing job, Dance will direct global marketing to support the growth and strengthening of Hawaii’s tourism industry. She will be paid $170,000 annually. Her arrival fills a major void created when David Uchiyama, the HTA’s former vice president of brand management, was laid off in a personnel shake-up that unfolded shortly after the HTA board of directors selected George Szigeti to lead the agency. He replaced Mike McCartney, who left to became Gov. David Ige’s chief of staff.
Szigeti, who took over as president and CEO on May 28, began selecting a new leadership team and making personnel cuts, including some of HTA’s top marketing executives, while cutting the administrative budget by $1.3 million. In addition to Uchiyama, Brian Lynx, HTA’s former vice president of meetings, conventions and incentives, was laid off along with one other marketing and two administrative workers. There also were a few voluntary departures.
The agency also has hired Charlene Chan as director of communications and Chris Sadayasu as brand manager. Both will be paid $85,000 annually. They started work with Dance on Tuesday.
“These are three eminently qualified, highly skilled professionals, each with an impressive body of work,” Szigeti said. “This solidifies our team’s capabilities as we begin a new year meeting the ever-present challenges of global competition for the world’s travelers.”
Dance, who was born in Honolulu, was selected from more than 100 applicants. She worked in public relations on Hawaii island and Oahu early in her career. For most of the past two decades, she has held executive marketing positions in London; Chicago; Rochester, N.Y.; and Seattle. She served as vice president of worldwide brand strategy, management and communication for Eastman Kodak from 2008 to 2013, and as corporate vice president and general manager of global marketing and communication for Motorola Mobile Device Business from 2000 to 2007.
Chan was hired to fill the void left by the departure of Angela Rodriguez, the HTA’s former communications and tourism brand manager. Chan was previously a product manager at Levi Strauss &Co. in San Francisco and most recently was executive vice president and chief operating officer for Honolulu public relations firm Bright Light Marketing.
“Charlene Chan is a savvy communications professional who ensures we will fulfill our pledge to be open and transparent with tourism’s stakeholders and the general public,” Szigeti said.
Sadayasu will replace Mike Story, HTA’s former brand manager of Oceania and sports marketing. A former college athlete and 1998 graduate of the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law, Sadayasu has worked for the City and County of Honolulu’s Office of Strategic Development, the Hawaii Community Development Authority and the Aloha Tower Development Corp.
