‘Star Wars’ surpasses ‘Titanic’ and ‘Jurassic World,’ breaking more box office records

LOS ANGELES » “Titanic” and “Jurassic World” have been toppled by the Force, and it looks as though “Avatar” is the next target.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” shattered more records as it continued to dominate the box office on New Year’s Day, taking in an estimated $34.5 million Friday, according to Box Office Mojo.
That brings domestic earnings for the sci-fi adventure to $686.5 million in just 15 days of release. “The Force Awakens” is now the highest-grossing of all seven “Star Wars” movies and has overtaken 2015’s “Jurassic World” ($652.3 million) and 1997’s “Titanic” ($658.7 million) to become the No. 2 domestic film of all time. The record for the all-time box-office champ, 2009’s “Avatar” (“$760.5 million), is now in its sights.
“Star Wars” also is now the seventh-highest grossing film of all time worldwide, having earned an estimated $1.4 billion.
The Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg comedy “Daddy’s Home” came in second place, earning an estimated $11.5 million Friday for a domestic total of $76.2 million.
In third place, Quentin Tarantino’s 70-mm western “The Hateful Eight” expanded from 100 to 2,474 theaters in its second weekend, earning an estimated $6.4 million Friday for a total of $19.8 million.

The Tina Fey-Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters,” in fourth, added an estimated $4.8 million to its coffers Friday for a total of $53.9 million in its third weekend.
In fifth place, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” earned an estimated $4.4 million on Friday for a total of $60 million, while David O. Russell’s “Joy,” starring Jennifer Lawrence, placed sixth with an estimated $4 million and an eight-day total of $32.3 million.
“The Big Short” came in seventh with an estimated $3.4 million for a total of $27.4 million. “Concussion” was No. 8 on Friday with an estimated $3.1 million for a total of $20.4 million. “Point Break,” at No. 9, earned an estimated $2.7 million for an eight-day total of $18.3 million. And rounding out the top 10 was “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2,” which took in an estimated $1.7 million for a total of $271.2 million.

Not surprising because new records are set almost every year. But I consider the Force Awakens as one of the worst of Star Wars films except for the Clone Wars and Sith movies.
some of us are lucky enough to watch it on dragon box. it does not live up to the hype

Star Wars deserves every penny! Fantastic movie. On the other hand, Hateful Eight was a “Tarantial” let down. Not one of his worst movies but too wordy and could have been cut down from almost 3 hours to 2 hours easily. I can see Kill Bill, Django and Pulp Fiction over and over again but Hateful Eight is a one-timer.
