2 alleged bank robbers held in Kapaa heist
Kauai police have arrested two men in connection with a robbery on Thursday at the Bank of Hawaii branch in Kapaa.
Brandon Lee Hartberg of Kapaa and Mathew Rose of Lihue were arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery. Both are being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
According to police, at about 10:40 a.m. Thursday a male suspect entered the bank holding what appeared to be a rifle wrapped in a towel and demanded money from a teller. The suspect fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
While conducting an aerial search at about 12:30 p.m., Kauai police spotted a green sedan leaving the Kapaa County Cemetery on Kanahele Road.
Police monitored the car as it headed down Hauaala Road onto Kuhio Highway. The car was heading north toward Kealia when it made a sudden U-turn toward Kapaa town. Officers stopped the car just south of the Kaiakea fire station. The driver was identified as Rose and his passenger was Hartberg.
Officers went to the cemetery and found a dark hooded sweatshirt and an air rifle wrapped in a towel. The investigation led police to overgrown brush off Moa Road in Kapaa at about 8 p.m., where officers found more than $1,000 in cash stashed in the brush.
Police have identified Hartberg as the suspect who robbed the bank.
