These guys know how to blaze a trail and break some hearts at the same time.
Devearl Ramsey provided the spark, pouring in 25 points to rally tiny Sierra Canyon (Calif.) from an 11-point deficit for a 53-48 upset win over national powerhouse La Lumiere (Ind.) on Tuesday night in the finals of the ‘Iolani Classic.
Brian Bowen led La Lumiere with 17 points and was named the tourney’s most outstanding player. The Lakers came to the islands ranked as high as No. 3 nationally.
For Sierra Canyon, it was their first trip to the islands, and they put on a championship performance in one of the tightest Classic finals in recent years.
“I hadn’t been playing the way I wanted,” the Nevada signee said. “I had to step up and be a leader. Coach (Ty Nichols) was telling me to be aggressive.”
Ramsey caught fire in the second quarter with seven points in a row to get the Trailblazers out of a 21-10 hole.
Sierra Canyon, located in Chatsworth, outside of Los Angeles, is now 9-1 overall and hoping to make some noise on the national scene. Its depth and defensive prowess were on display on Tuesday thanks to the inside play of Ira Lee and Cody Riley.
Lee scored seven points, 10 rebounds and two blocks before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Riley had 12 points and four rebounds, and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
The ’Blazers took command with fullcourt pressure and a big 3-pointer by point guard Remy Martin that tied the game at 42-all with 4:07 remaining.
Bowen hit a bank shot to tie the game at 44 moments later. Sierra Canyon then went ahead for good, 47-44, on another 3-pointer by Ramsey with 3:12 left. Free throws by Adam Seiko increased the lead to 50-44.
The Lakers pulled within 50-46 after Bowen sank two foul shots with 1:06 to go, and after Ramsey was whistled for an offensive foul at midcourt against fullcourt pressure, momentum was shifting.
However, the Lakers were stone cold offensively. In the fourth quarter, they shot 3-for-8 from the field and committed seven turnovers.
Martin hit two free throws and Terrance McBride added one more to put the game on ice.
