NEW YORK >> The Whitney Museum of American Art’s new Renzo Piano-designed building in Manhattan affords it all kinds of ways to present art in innovative manners.
For 11 weeks next year it will turn its 18,000-square-foot, column-free fifth-floor galleries into a single open gallery — unobstructed by interior walls.
“Open Plan” will feature solo exhibitions by five artists from Feb. 26 to May 14.
The museum says it has invited the artists to respond to the open space “with projects ranging from several days to two weeks.”
They are performance artist Andrea Fraser, painter Lucy Dodd, sculptor and earth artist Michael Heizer, improvisational composer and pianist Cecil Taylor, and video artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen.
The Whitney moved from its longtime uptown location to the trendy Meatpacking District in May.
Park’s snowmobile season opens
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Mont. >> Winter travel into Yellowstone National Park is open thanks to recent snowstorms.
The Billings Gazette reported that visitors can now travel the park’s interior roads from the North, West and South entrances on commercially guided snowmobiles and snow coaches. Travel through the park’s East Entrance over Sylvan Pass is scheduled to begin Tuesday.
Visitors with appropriate permits can also participate in the Noncommercially Guided Snowmobile Access Program.
The Geyser Grill, Bear Den Gift Shop and Old Faithful Visitor Education Center opened for the season Tuesday.
Park officials say staff members will continue to monitor road conditions and weather forecasts that can have an impact on roadways and guided over-snow travel operations.
