When Kaimuki guard Victoria Kintz needs a boost — whether in a game or practice — the green and yellow banner commemorating the Bulldogs’ OIA Division II championship last season never fails to provide energy.
“I’m proud of that banner,” Kintz said. “I remind the girls at practice when we get slow, when we get sloppy. ‘It’s like look at that banner. What do we want? Do we want to let someone take that banner away? Do we want another one?’ That’s what gives us that reminder, let’s go.”
Kintz got the Bulldogs going early in Tuesday’s OIA East matchup with Kahuku with three 3-pointers in the first quarter and Kaimuki ended up hitting eight from long range and held off the visiting Red Raiders 41-36 to earn its second win over a Division I opponent in the regular season.
Kintz finished the night with a game-high 16 points and freshman guard Kaelyn Espinda added nine points and hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter to help the Bulldogs (2-0) overcome a five-point halftime deficit.
After being outscored 14-6 in the second quarter to go into the break trailing the Red Raiders (1-1) 26-21, the Bulldogs received a simple message from coach Mona Faasoa.
“Stop playing like individuals, play as a team,” Faasoa said.
The Bulldogs caught the Red Raiders at 29-29 when Kintz hit her fourth 3-pointer and took the lead for good at 32-30 when Sonia Palik found Brandi Pfeiffer-Kekoa alone under the basket for a layup. Espinda followed with a 3-pointer to give the Bulldogs a five-point edge.
“That’s what we needed to be reminded of, play as a team,” Kintz said. “We don’t need to shoot 3s all the time, pass the ball, swing the ball and we’re good.”
Kaimuki spread the floor in the fourth quarter to force the Kahuku defense to chase it around the court. The Bulldogs’ one field goal and four free throws proved to be just enough to preserve the win and Kaimuki held Kahuku without a field goal in the final period.
Forward Brittni Blake finished with 13 points to lead the Red Raiders, who have just two seniors and were without several regulars due to injury.
“(The Bulldogs) were pretty solid from the 3-point line, we haven’t faced that all season,” Kahuku coach Marlene Zeug said. “I think they were consistently hitting their 3-point shots, we had to make adjustments on our defense and we did better in the second half. Overall it was a good game. It was a solid game.
“We have a really young team. We’re missing several starters, and it affected our rotations with the girls who are missing practices. … We’re still trying to get into the swing of things.”
